Matthew 4:1-4 (KJV)

1  Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

2  And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

3  And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

4  But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

After Jesus had fasted starvation began – then the devil attacked. The devil was targeting Jesus natural feelings knowing Jesus was hungry to try to get His attention off the leading of the Holy Spirit and being focused on what He was guided and purposed to do. The lie was to focus on the natural, temporary feelings and not on the eternal purpose. Note: Your feelings will lie to you.

Jesus didn’t need to turn the stones into bread, no that would be fulfilling the natural desires. Jesus is the Bread of Life (John 6:35), He is the Word, He is Life! Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God, which produces faith when it is heard (Romans 10:17), believed and received. The just shall live by faith!

Matthew 4:5-7

5  Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

6  And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

7  Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

In any temptation the devil brings is a lie. The comment “If thou be the Son of God” first of all Jesus had nothing to prove. The devil tried to use the Word to deceive (Psalm 91:11-12) and of course Jesus already knew it because He is the Word. We don’t tempt God to prove His Word to the devil or anyone else.

Psalm 91:11-12 (KJV)

11  For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12  They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Matthew 4:8-11

8  Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

9  And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

10  Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

11  Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

The devil doesn’t have anything to give, he’s a thief.

To buy the devil’s lies is to believe what he says, receiving them as truth.

It’s important for us to remember, the lies of the devil seem so real, but they are deceptions. The devil will try anything to get us to believe and receive his lies.

It Is Vitally Important To Resist The Devil

James 4:7 (KJV)

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

James 4:7 (AMPC – The Amplified Bible)

So be subject to God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him], and he will flee from you.

Ephesians 4:27 (AMPC – The Amplified Bible)

Leave no [such] room or foothold for the devil [give no opportunity to him].

Leave No Open Door For The Devil

1 Peter 5:7-9 (KJV)

7  Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

8  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

9  Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

1 Peter 5:7-9 (AMPC – The Amplified Bible)

7  Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully. [Psa 55:22]

8  Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour.

9  Withstand him; be firm in faith [against his onset–rooted, established, strong, immovable, and determined], knowing that the same (identical) sufferings are appointed to your brotherhood (the whole body of Christians) throughout the world.
